The Forest Policy and Innovation Database originally started through work done for the integrated FP6 project EFORWOOD for which a forest policy database was developed in 2008-2009. The original concept for this database was as a policy tool within the context of a sustainability assessment of the forest-wood-chain. This was later developed to become a database for forest and mountain policy within the FP7 project ARANGE project, and now also including an innovation database on non-wood forest products, as developed for the StarTree project, and on innovations as regards to different forest management and conservation strategies for the BeFoFu project. The present platform and associated databases have been developed in connection with work for the GENTREE project on optimizing the management and sustainable use of forest genetic resources in Europe.
Integrating content for a database on forest policy and innovation came naturally through the work being done by the European Forest Institute Central-East European Regional Office for all these projects. In part, the aim has been to preserve efforts and results from past and ongoing projects, such as Startree and GENTREE, and to create a valuable tool for future research on forest policy and innovation. The provision of all relevant content for this type of policy research on one platform can help significantly.
